Vampires in the Lemon Grove

I was introduced to Karen Russell's collection of stories by accident.  I was perusing our library's online lending library and the title I wanted to read was not available.  The cover of this book is what intrigued me.  What could vampires want with a lemon grove?

I really enjoyed the title story.  A married vampire couple tries to cure their thirst with something other than blood, and one of them develops a fear of flying. The writing is evocative and interesting but I felt it lacked a proper ending.  I found this to be true of several other stories in the collection.

Reeling for the Empire imagines a silk factory in Japan during the 19th century where the girls have metamorphosed into silkworms.  White fur begins growing on their faces and they begin reeling silk from their bellies.  I was captivated by the imagery that came to mind as the story was told.

A few of the other tales were difficult to get into.  Proving Up had a very abrupt ending and I found myself wanting to know more.  Russell is a wonderful writer.  All in all, this was an okay book. Worth checking out if you're waiting for something else to come in at the library.
