Television Rebooted

I'm going to channel Sophia Petrillo for a moment.  Picture it:  A small town in Wisconsin in the year nineteen-eighty-something. I'm watching television with my mom on any given weekday.  She loved Cagney and Lacey, Knots Landing, and Magnum, P.I.  Magnum was her No. 1 favorite.

My mother loved Tom Selleck.  If I were to use today's lingo, I'd say he was her celeb crush. When the theme song began we were glued to the couch. Her favorite part was at the end when Magnum turns around and raises his eyebrows for the ladies...what a hunk!

"Doesn't he remind you of your dad?" Mom asked.  "So handsome!"

Honestly, I didn't know what to make of that statement as an 8-year-old, but as an adult I admit that Tom Selleck is definitely handsome.  (I totally understand why Monica Geller had a fling with Richard Burke, and why I'm addicted to Blue Bloods.  Well, to be honest, Donnie Wahlberg may have something to do with it, too. That show is genius!)

Magnum had it all.  Action, excitement, car chases, beautiful landscapes of Hawaii...and that theme song!

Let's not forget the other characters in this series. Robin Masters, Jonathan Higgins, Rick, T.C., Ice Pick!  Of course I must also mention Zeus and Apollo, the most famous Dobermans on television.

When I read this article the other day I was jumping for joy.  First they bring back S.W.A.T (Hello, Shemar Moore!) and now they're rebooting Magnum.  And Cagney and Lacey?  I'm excited but I'm leery about the actors they'll choose to put into these classic television roles.  Who can compare to Tom Selleck?

What about Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless!

They were cool. They were bad-ass.  The show was ahead of its time quite honestly.

I miss those old 80s television shows.  I own all eight seasons of Magnum on DVD.  I watch them with my boys now and reminisce on my childhood.  They love the car chases.  And those Dobermans.  They also want to own a 1981 Ferrari 308GTSi just like Magnum drove.

Can't say I blame them.  That show was damn cool.
